Anouk Houtman is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and has a background in visual anthropology and gender studies. After her bachelor’s in Amsterdam, she continued with an MA in visual anthropology in Leiden where she started using the camera professionally for the first time. During her fieldwork in Indonesia, Anouk made an ethnographic film called Across Gender, which focuses on the negotiation of visibility when one ‘crosses gender’ in Yogyakarta. This project inspired her to follow this up with an MA in gender studies, which she recently finished. Anouk has a wide range of interests but is especially passionate about projects dealing with activism, feminism, gender, sexuality and power relations. She is interested in people’s personal stories and experiences and believes film is a tool for social change.

Her films have explored a range of themes, including LGBTI rights, female genital mutilation (FGM), feminism and Islam and money in politics. In recent years, she has collaborated with the Ishka Films, the Galway Film Centre and Galway UNESCO City of Film, and her work has been commissioned by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, the Irish Film Board, the Simon Cumbers Media Fund and Science Foundation Ireland.
